Sports Performance

We all know that taking part in any sport takes both physical control and concentration. The good news is that hypnosis can help with both of these.

Athletes and sports people use all types of sports technology in an effort to improve their results whether it’s new techniques, equipment, nutrition, sport psychology (which often includes focusing and visualisation techniques).

Hypnosis has been used for many years in the field of sports. In 1956 the Russian team took 11 hypnotists with them to the Melbourne Olympics. Irish athletes commissioned a hypnosis practitioner to work with team members to help them prepare for the 2012 Olympics. The key focus was on the small mental factors to improve performance under pressure.

It’s well known that coaches often use visualisation techniques with athletes where an athlete would essentially “see” and “experience” success in their minds. Results from this can often vary from person to person often depending on how visual the person is. By using hypnosis, it allows the sports person to achieve greater results as under hypnosis, a person is better placed to “see” themselves performing and that result is then in the subconscious essentially programming it in.

Remember that hypnosis is when you are in a relaxed state but also a state of altered awareness, where the consciousness is more focused. Therefore, the effects of suggestions or visualisations are increased during this stage. During this state with the help of a hypnotherapist, a sports person can use suggestions to help improve style and technique. Apart from visualising the actual technique of the sport, hypnosis can help with confidence and belief helping to alleviate self-doubt.
